Do NOT update your client to Minecraft 1.2 until the server is updated. If you want to play MC 1.2 vanilla on your own, but still want access to the server, you’ll have to create a backup of your minecraft.jar first. If you don’t know how to do this, either look it up or just stay on Minecraft 1.1. It’s not like 1.2 is magic fairy dust or something. (it’s not, right? cause I could use some) The server will update when the development version of Craftbukkit looks stable enough for us. That will probably take a week.

In case any of you need the 1.1 minecraft jar, here’s the link to my personal 1.1 jar without any mods.

If you need help installing it, let me know by replying to the post.
. . .
You do know it’s a violation of EULA to post minecraft.jar, right?
To backup your own minecraft copy, on Windows, go to %APPDATA%/.minecraft/bin and copy the minecraft.jar file there. In addition, if you want to play on the server but also play vanilla 1.2, there are launchers that allow easy switching (such as Magic Launcher).
There’s a huge difference between lawful and ethical. There’s nothing wrong with posting the minecraft.jar, especially when Mojang doesn’t provide downloads for older versions.
It’s a bit late to be told how to backup after you have updated.
I posted this warning on both the website and twitter well before the update. It’s also the same message we’ve said after every update.
Also, for those on Mac, you can search for “Terminal”, open the application Terminal and when your name comes up, type “chflags nohidden ~/Library”. You can close that, then open Finder. Go to your Home > Library > Application Support > minecraft. Now you can drag the jar to your “bin” folder and change the name of the original “minecraft.jar” to “minecraft_orig.jar” and change the name of the .jar that you just downloaded to “minecraft.jar”. Now your back in 1.1!
I did what you said jaynoscopes verbatim. First i got the dreaded updating minecraft done loading screen. Out of frustration i just felt like playing single player. I try to download the new update and i get the same screen. All of this stuff is greek to me.
It won’t download the new version of minecraft when you delete/rename minecraft.jar without also deleting the md5/version files.
Do i need an the updated version of minecraft to rename or change to 1.1?
Basically, you just download the update and then follow my instructions by adding the minecraft.jar. As long as you just update normally you’ll be fine.
What’s the current status for possible upgrade?
For those that don’t know, You can download MagicLauncher (http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/939149-launcher-magic-launcher-097-mods-options-news/) and you can configure multiple versions of Minecraft to run on a single machine.
Awesome, thank you for the heads up!
Aw, why’d you have to go and warn them? I was looking forward to a lower population. 😛
heheh
Aw man should’ve kept the jar to myself. 😉
Are we going to make a new world when 1.2 comes? I think maybe it would be a good idea 1) to find some cool jungle biomes and 2) just to kinda explore a new world! (that could also be a cool project to make a new city around spawn)
I agree we need a new world to expand are ideas and creativety i think that would be a good idea
The current server software puts a heavier strain on servers with more worlds unless I use a modified version of Craftbukkit. This may change going forward, but with our larger population I don’t know if we have the leeway to make a new world right now. I DO want a new jungle biome, but there’s other ways of getting those: expanding a current world (probably gamma), or regenerating some already generated land. I’d prefer the latter if the new biomes align well with the current ones. It would also keep the server dense, which is preferable. I’d rather not expand the borders, which would increase the world file sizes — delta is getting really large.
no more worlds.unless we turn one off. That’s what I think
We could merge the nethers together. They’re so sloppy anyway, it’d work. Oh oh… and then we could put the End portal there.. at the bottom of a catacomb.
Wouldn’t that damage/destroy any farms or structures you have built?
Not if I moved them all… unfortunately people like to build them in little hidden cubbies. 🙁 It’s the big reason why that particular idea won’t fly.
Ok, I LOVE the idea of the End Portal being at the bottom of the catacombs! 😀 That would make it hard to get there!
When will the server be up to date i rilly want to see those new bioms
It’s in the article: “That will probably take a week.”
So, eh, when will the server be up to date? (more than a week later 😉
Hmmmmm I would think as soon as its ready but you know people like holding this back.
Probably as soon as its ready
Ok guys. Some of ya’ll are super excited to see the new biomes. Granted, that will be cool. If you really want to do that then you can switch between 1.2 and 1.1. I personally have already seen them and their ok. Just install a weekly snapshot or update then revert to 1.1.
Because the Bukkit devs switched over to a new event system (too quickly) and broke most plugins, it’ll be a rocky transition. This means we can’t go on a dev build of 1.2 until plugins are sorted. I’m doing a lot of testing on a test server this time around. Like Minecraft updates before this, it’ll take up to 3 weeks.
Hopefully with bukkit being acquired by Mojang:
http://www.minecraftforum.net/news/417-bukkit-officially-joins-mojang/
The next update will be quicker.
Eh. They’re completely rewriting the API from scratch. That doesn’t sound like it’s faster. It’s more rocky situation than you can imagine, too. The Bukkit team has created a somewhat hostile environment for differing opinions, and then got promoted afterwards. 🙁 The Spout team is working on an alternative that may or may not be more popular than the official API. And who knows, Craftbukkit may continue on in a fork by a different team.
What happens if you’ve read this after updating lol
Do I just have to wait a week until the server is updated?
Downgrade by downloading the minecraft.jar above, then placing it in the directory. (usually C:\users\username\appdata\roaming\.minecraft\bin\)
Hmm I am on a mac but I have placed the 1.1 jar in the minecraft bin but it was still loading 1.2 so I removed the original mincraft.jar file and I log in and it goes to a screen saying “updating minecraft” and the loading bar is about 95% of the way full and it says “done loading” above that but it never completely loads. Any help would be much appreciated thanks!
Never mind I’ve got it working now, I had to rename the jar thank you for your help!
Or you could just do what i did have 2 logins on your com or what im useing atm spoutcraft mod it hasent updated to 1.2 yet so i play on the server on spoutcraft and 1.2 on minecraft simple as…, some thing
That’s… harder than what I do. Just renaming two files sounds easier. 😀
if you say so hope fully spout craft wont update then i could not get on that would be sad 🙁
I think reclaiming would be a good fit, as well as merging the nethers, or at least delta and gamma’s nethers. Alpha’s is really built up for all the time it was active.
I think 3 worlds is more than enough for people to have room and explore away from civilisation. At best I think we should regenerate some existing land. Its just not reasonable to make a new world for every major patch as I am sure there will be many more.
I like the idea of merging nethers though think maybe a fresh shared nether with buildings brought in if people wish them might be a good way to go.
Agreed, that sounds better. I just really like the new jungle biome.
I did a test run. All plugins seem to be working for the most part, with bugs here and there. (ie. WorldEdit refused to regenerate properly) The way it converts the maps has me concerned. I saw stripes of biomes, invisible trees, bad chunk walls… they seem to bake the biomes into the world when it converts. So not only do we get chunk walls in perfect lines, but the biomes are in perfect lines now too. That creates an enormous amount of extra work. 🙁 (especially with WorldEdit regen not working) I’m going to try again with a different version of Craftbukkit and see if I can get better results. I’m thinking I want to do to Delta what I did to Alpha — prevent new terrain generation to keep it cohesive. Then maybe expand Gamma and fix what I can.
how about we scrap everything and start over?
lol
Awesome idea Scotty.
Save some peoples important work then just wipe the whole lot and start new on a single server.
You can be in charge of transferring our old supplies and buildings.
HAHA I like Orthien’s idea. 😛 And for every person that can provide proof that their missing something, they get gold and diamonds. 😉
While this thought has occurred to me, it might be more space efficient to salvage alot of alpha. There are quite a few half built locations, homes, holes, and ect in alpha that havnt been touched in a very long time. As long as we have a way to bring our current supplies into this new world, and a way to still visit our old world via DL or something. Either that, or have each person mark one structure they want into the new world, and have it become a huge central city with streets and each persons building part of it. Alot of work, but id be willing to help in any way i can to move this along.
That’s not necessary. I’ve gotten Alpha down to 500MB and it’s fine as is. I’m more concerned about changes to Delta and Gamma in this transition. I’m having a hard time deciding how to do it, but I’ll get there.
Well let me know what i can do to help
